CLUB SESSIONS - What happens at our club sessions?

As well as learning and improving our badminton shots, we also improve our fitness and footwork and try to concentrate on match play and improving our tactics for singles, doubles and mixed. We try to make this more enjoyable by having club tournaments and competitions, these include: End of season singles and doubles competitions, mini singles/doubles/mixed doubles tournaments, skills competition and a singles and doubles ladder Competition also operates during the season.

Other club initiatives to develop players:

At the end of each season, the club presents a number of awards to those players, the most prestigious of which is the Stuart Dickson Player of the Year Award – this award has been set up in memory of our long time manager/coach and friend who sadly passed away November 2006. It is awarded on an annual basis to one player from each session that has shown some or all of the following attributes:

2. Has good court manners
3. Listens when being coached and tries their best
4. Their game or some of their shots have improved
5. Is a good sport and always enjoys playing.

Penarth Juniors are twinned with Aix en Provence Badminton. In August this year the Club took a team of 14 players aged 13 – 18 years to the South of France to train at the Aix badminton camp and play a team match against the local club. Our Welsh team trained in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees centigrade and although training was intensive players showed a good level of endurance and commitment. In the team match, Penarth Juniors were up against an older and more experienced team and all players fought with real determination, notable performances from Denholm Edmunds and Luke Jones in singles and doubles, Marco Arrighi and Will Painter in doubles, Sarah Platt, Will Beech and Sara Edwards, Marco Arrighi and Charlotte Platt in Mixed Doubles. Penarth narrowly lost 9 – 10, a fantastic match played with great atmosphere and good sportsmanship.

A great time was had by all Welsh and French players, coaches and families and as a result we will be hosting the French team once again in 2010 – Allez les Gallois!

What is happening 2009/2010 season?

We have entered a boys doubles team in the senior league and an under 18 team and under 14 team in the junior league. In 2010 the Club will be hosting Aix en Provence Badminton Club and we are looking forward to organising a number of matches for Club and County players to enjoy.
