Development (5x60 / Dev)
Welsh Badminton currently employs a number of Badminton Development Coordinators (BDCs).
The role of the BDC is specific to the Welsh Badminton 5 x 60 / Development schools scheme which started in 2008.
Each BDC works within designated local authorities with a remit to work with 5 x 60 officers within all secondary schools in those authorities.
At the moment this provides the potential for access into 125 schools, some 55% of the total in Wales.
Welsh Badminton offers to each school the opportunity to have badminton taster days in the school, run by the BDC.
The pathway is then to progress to the establishment of junior groups and ultimately junior clubs within the schools.
Welsh Badminton also offer to each PE department the opportunity to run the Welsh Badminton level 0 workshop (see the Coaching section).
This dual strategy of setting up and establishing groups / clubs within the school together with a taster of a pre coaching qualification will lead to an increase in the base of the junior participant pyramid.
In time, existing county performance centres will benefit from a player increase into CODs, and COEs from an influx of players badged as talent.
Able juniors will also quickly find access into competitive adult clubs.
It follows that Welsh Badminton on a National scale will also benefit greatly.
Development of disability clubs
The Development of disability clubs across Wales is a target that is key to the expansion of the game in Wales. The Disability Working Group has established a Development Plan that will hopefully see an increase in coaches and players taking up the sport. We are keen to identify and support coaches and players who are interested in becoming involved with the sport.
